Evaluate an AI-Generated Project Summary

Check an AI summary against its source for omissions, unsupported claims, altered certainty, and misleading emphasis before anyone relies on it.

Define a trustworthy summary

A useful summary preserves the source's important meaning while making it easier to act. Fluency is only one dimension. Decide what must survive compression: decisions, unresolved questions, owners, dates, dependencies, and dissent where it matters. If the source is incomplete, the summary should retain that limitation. A neat paragraph can still be inaccurate if it turns a tentative suggestion into a confirmed commitment.

Use a small reference set

Choose several approved examples with different challenges: a clear update, conflicting notes, missing ownership, and an ambiguous deadline. Mark the facts a good summary should contain. Include at least one case where the correct output says information is missing. Keep this reference set separate from the examples used to tune the prompt, so you can detect improvement beyond familiarity with a single document.

Trace claims to the source

Review each material statement and locate its support. Check names, numbers, dates, and causal language. “The vendor delay caused the missed milestone” is stronger than notes that merely mention both events. Classify errors by consequence: an invented owner may be more serious than an awkward sentence. The meeting-actions workflow offers a structured format for keeping uncertain responsibilities visible instead of filling them in.

Check omissions and framing

Accuracy is not only the absence of invented facts. A summary can reproduce several correct details while omitting the one unresolved issue that changes the decision. Compare emphasis with the purpose and audience. Ask whether the reader would form a materially different understanding from the source. Include a review of negative or contradictory evidence, especially when the draft sounds unusually confident about project health.

Measure total effort

Record review time, corrections, and whether the final output was usable. Compare that effort with preparing the same summary manually on similar material. Do not claim a productivity gain from generation time alone. Use the results to revise instructions or narrow the task. The AI pilot evaluation guide shows how to combine usefulness and reliability when deciding whether to expand a workflow.
